Katelyn started playing softball this year along with Little League Baseball on Robert's team. I've decided that I really like the vibe in the girls' dugout better. Apparently, women's ability to multi-task begins early. While the boys are mostly concerned with winning the game and their dugout conversations consist of discussing yesterday's MLB scores and plays, lots more is going on in the girls' dugout at a softball game.
The girls are concerned about winning the game, but they are also making sure they cheer for everyone with organized cheers, saying "good swing!" to batters who come in the dugout after striking out, standing in line according to batting order, making sure their gloves and water bottles are in the same place each time they come in from the field, putting hair ties on their t-shirts so they don't look so big/long, finding out what snacks are available during and after the game, picking up trash from the floor of the dugout, and they're interested in whether their families (especially little brothers and sisters) are having fun.
Meanwhile, back in the boys' dugout, no one can find his glove, they're drinking out of each other's water bottles, someone is going to be late getting out on the field because his glove is missing, they really don't care about who brought what for a snack--you don't eat in the dugout anyway, and they're hoping the moms don't cheer too loud and their little sisters don't embarass them by simply breathing.
Katelyn's softball team played five (!) games yesterday at a tournament in Fairbanks. They won first place in the tournament, only losing one game of the series. They are undefeated in their regular season of play. This is their first year playing and they are doing a great job.

Katelyn received an MVP jersey for the first game of the tournament--she scored both of the team's runs in the game.
The girls conspire to dump the cooler of water on their coach after their win. (And I didn't get a photo of it!)
