I knew it! I knew the wind was stronger than 35 mph. Here's an article about a roof in Delta Junction (10 minutes away) being blown off.

It was right around 50 today, but we had some snow in the morning. That is about a 100 degree change in temperature from what we had during our "cold snap"!

It was 43 degrees today. Robert and Steve played a little catch yesterday and Robert set up his net that you pitch at and the ball bounces back to you. I think he might think it's Spring. I'm not going to tell him it's not. When you go outside, you think it's a beautiful Spring day--then comes night and unbelievable wind. I fully expect the roof to blow off in the night. This might not be a bad thing, as I wouldn't have to ask Robert to clean his room anymore. The moose would be happy telling his friend, "Hey, Bullwinkle, the gods must be crazy! A bunch of empty plastic water bottles, a bag of pretzel pieces, some crackers, three M & Ms, half a Poptart, a soggy Atomic Fireball, one holey sock and five pair of dirty underwear just landed on my head!" That would be on a day after Robert's cleaned his room. You don't want to know what would blow out of there if it wasn't clean.
The gusts have been very strong--the weather report says up to 35 mph, but I don't think that's right. I can hear the nails squeaking in the roof trying to pull out. I can put my hand on the wall inside the house and feel the drywall bend and move with the blowing wind, it's got to be more than 35 mph!

So, I was cooking taco meat for fifty this evening and, in the process, set off the smoke detector. If I have on three burners or two burners and the oven, the smoke alarm goes off. This is not because I've burned anything yet, it just goes off in anticipation.
I turned on the hood vent and opened the window, which caused a steady stream of cold, foggy air to tumble over the windowsill, down the sink and on the floor. It looked like the fog that might roll across the stage at a rock concert. It was dark outside, and I half expected Ozzy Osbourne (you know, The Prince of Frozen Darkness) to stick his head in the window and say something like "Let me climb in your foggy, frozen window, there are a few frosty frozen moose out here." Of course, he never says what you think you hear him say, but in this case, it could have been the one time the muttering man made sense.
Anyway...back to the story...after a few minutes, the cooling rack that was in the sink was covered with a layer of frost and the little drip that was coming out of the filtered water faucet was frozen as it came out. I rinsed the taco meat and put my wet hand on the main faucet, and once again I was reminded that I should just wear oven mitts any time I'm in the kitchen with the window open and touching the faucet.
As I was standing in front of the stove and its three hot burners and the oven which was on and preheated and with the smoke alarm going off, I was pelted in the forehead with little balls of what can only be described as sleet coming from the vent. This is a very strange place. I'm just now realizing that if I were shorter, I would have missed this bit of Alasaka-ness. I would have just had to wonder how the refrigerator behind me got all wet.
